Mayrhofen – Dominikushütte

From Mayrhofen into the Zemmgrund, through the gorge to Ginzling on a well-built road with avalanche galleries. A gravel track climbs opposite the toll road and returns to the foot of the Schlegeis dam. In serpentines up to the dam crest towards the Dominikushütte – with a sensational panorama over the Schlegeis glacier and reservoir. Continuation towards the Pfitscherjoch possible.

Dominikushütte – Pfitscher Joch Haus

From the Zamsergatterl up to the Pfitscherjoch you should sit firmly in the saddle. The route is mostly single-trail in character but always wide enough. Over stones and small steps it is 98% rideable – for fit, technically skilled bikers. After the border crossing, the Pfitscher Joch Haus (Italy) awaits.

Starting point Schlegeis

Walk from hut to hut

The Schlegeis reservoir is the starting point for many walks, mountain and glacier tours. For hikers with enough stamina, the Panorama road Schlegeis (approx. 6 h) is a fine way to walk from hut to hut.

The walk along the shore to the Furtschagl-Haus (2,295 m) offers impressive views over the Schlegeis glacier.

Tour description

In detail

From the Dominikushütte through a wonderful pine forest to the Friesenberg Alm, continuing to the Lapenkar. The hut is already visible. The path leads through the pan of the valley in serpentines to the hut.

Cross the Italian border and walk into the South-Tyrolean Pfitschertal. The climb through the scenic high valley Zamser Grund leads to the Pfitscher-Joch-Haus (2,277 m), approx. 2½ hours from the reservoir. Along the Schlegeis reservoir, turn right at the bridge past the kiosk Zamsgatterl.

For the enduring, the Panorama trail Schlegeis (approx. 6 h) links several huts and offers continuous, impressive views over the reservoir and glaciers.
